Keeping on track

We often set ourselves goals or resolutions at the beginning of the year both in our personal lives and in the work place to meet certain targets. However, how often do you take time out to reflect on how well you are doing, whether you are still on track or whether you need to take some drastic action?

In the business world you may have a half yearly review to check where you are, but often this is a cursory review. Nevertheless, by going through the process you still stop and think about where you are and what needs to happen for the rest of the year.

But do you do that in your personal life? Are you considering where you are in terms of your aims in life? Or have you given up on them this year?

Too often people get caught up in the “busyness” of life and drop their focus on their goals. This is a shame. If you keep putting off what you really want from life, what sort of life will it be?

Don’t lessen your dreams to fit in with your life. Up your effort to meet your dreams.

So what action needs to take place right now to get you back on track? And what will you do about it?

Clear the decks

It is amazing just how our physical surroundings can weigh so heavy on our minds. When we are hemmed in by our own mess and clutter, we are constantly thinking to ourselves ‘I must get rid of this’ or ‘I hate looking at that’, but often don’t have the time right now or ‘it’s not a priority’…

Such nagging thoughts – even if only at the back of our minds – actually drain away some of our precious energy.  It may not be a priority to have a nice-looking room or tidy desk from an aesthetic point of view, but from a mental perspective it can be a huge relief to have things in the right place where they can be found more easily.  It will also save time as you no longer need to rummage through piles of paper to find what you are looking for.

It doesn’t have to take much time either.  It’s amazing how much you can get through in the odd half-hour and, with the right attitude, you’ll be willing to throw lots away too.

So clear the decks and allow space for some positive energy into your life!

Responsibility

Over the last few weeks the sporting fixtures have been adversely affected by the weather with lots of matches being postponed. There has been much ensuing debate as to whether all of these games should be cancelled. For instance, in football, there were a few games where the pitches were fine to play on – under soil heating sees to that.  The seating area had all the ice and snow cleared and the area within the ground was deemed safe for people to attend. However, matches were still called off because it may be dangerous to walk down the street or drive your car in the surrounding roads.

Likewise, many schools were closed at the first sign of snow forcing many parents into having to work from home or hurriedly try to find some alternative childcare.

I fully accept that when the weather is a full scale blizzard it is stupid to go out in it. However, it also seems like we have become a nanny state and no longer take responsibility for our own actions. There is no longer such a thing as an accident, we need to find someone else to blame.

Unfortunately, this goes on everywhere, in the office, at home, in our relationships. We think that blame will get us off the hook and justify our thoughts and feelings.

So who are you blaming right now for something?

What can you do to take responsibility for all your thoughts and actions?

What WILL you do to take responsibility today?

Visions and Dreams

Many of us have an idea of what we want to achieve in our career. We may not have it all planned out but we have an idea of the direction that we are going in and an idea of what success will look like…but do you have the same for the rest of your life?

Have you ever taken some time to decide what you want from life? What is important to you today? What do you want from your life in 5 years time, 10 years, or 20 years time?

Do you know the answer?

Do you want to be famous or known as a leading expert? Or make a significant difference or contribution in a particular way? Or maybe you want to leave a legacy behind you?

Do you want to retire early and have a comfortable life? Or do you want to run your own business that works for you?

Do you know the answers? Are you on the path to achieving your dreams? What do you really want?

What do you want from life?
